Self-censorship

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Self-censorship is when a person chooses to hide their own ideas. They might not say what they really think. This can happen for many reasons.

Many people stay quiet to fit in. They may fear being left out by a group. Some people change their views to match the majority. This helps them feel like they belong.

Money can also cause self-censorship. A book editor might leave out a topic. They do this so they do not upset customers. They do not want to lose their job. This is sometimes called soft censorship.

In some places, laws make people stay quiet. Artists might change their work to avoid trouble with leaders. In China, many social media accounts have been shut down. This happens when the content does not follow rules.

Journalists also use self-censorship to keep people safe. One reporter waited to tell a story about hostages. He wanted to make sure they were safe first. This is a way to protect lives while still telling the truth.
