Self-censorship

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Self-censorship is when a person chooses to hide their own ideas. This is different from being told what to say by someone else. Instead, people decide on their own to keep certain thoughts private. They might do this to avoid being disliked by others. It can also happen to avoid making people feel uncomfortable. Many different people do this, like musicians and journalists.

There are many reasons why someone might choose to stay quiet. Some people want to feel like they belong to a group. They might fear being left out if they say something unpopular. Others might change their opinions to match what most people think. This is sometimes called a spiral of silence. Other times, people do it for money or safety. An editor might leave out a topic to keep advertisers happy. This is sometimes called soft censorship.

History shows that self-censorship has happened for a long time. In the past, scientists in Nazi Germany hid certain findings. They did this because they disagreed with the leaders of that time. In the world of science, people also worry about safety. In 2003, leaders of science journals talked about biological weapons. They felt that some research might be too dangerous to share. They wanted to make sure that new information did not cause harm. This shows how people weigh the benefits of sharing against the risks.

Different places in the world see self-censorship in different ways. A 2019 survey in Germany found some interesting numbers. About 59% of people felt they could speak freely with friends. However, only 18% felt they could do that in public. Only 17% felt they could express themselves freely on the Internet. In China, the government has many rules for the internet. In October 2018, nearly 10,000 social media accounts were shut down. This happened because they did not follow the rules for content.

Self-censorship can also be a way to protect people. Journalists sometimes stay quiet to keep others from getting hurt. One reporter named Jean Pelletier found a secret story. He waited to publish it until hostages were safe in Iran. This helped keep the people involved from being in danger. Other journalists might hide military secrets to keep soldiers safe. While it can be hard to stay quiet, sometimes it is a choice made to help others.
