Cars and trucks have a special part to clean their exhaust.

This part is called a catalytic converter. It helps keep our air clean by changing bad gases. These gases come from the engine when it runs.

Inside the device, there is a core.

This core often looks like a honeycomb. It is usually made of ceramic. It has many tiny holes to give the gases more space. A coating called a washcoat covers the core. This coating is rough to help the gases touch the metals inside.

The converter uses precious metals to work. These metals include platinum, palladium, and rhodium.

Rhodium helps with a process called reduction. This means it breaks down nitrogen oxides. These gases can cause smog and acid rain. Palladium and platinum help with oxidation. This means they turn carbon monoxide and fuel bits into carbon dioxide and water.

Most cars use a "three-way" converter. It does these three tasks at once.

These parts work best when they are very hot. Because of this, they sit close to the engine.
