Cassini studied many things. It looked at Saturn's rings and its many moons. It also watched the clouds in Saturn's atmosphere. The mission ended on September 15, 2017. The craft fell into Saturn and burned up. This was done on purpose. Scientists did not want the craft to crash into any moons. They wanted to keep the moons safe from Earth germs.

The mission used two different parts to do its work. First, the Cassini orbiter traveled to the planet to circle it.

Second, the Huygens probe was sent to land on a moon. This moon is named Titan. On December 25, 2004, the two parts separated. Huygens used a parachute to land on Titan's surface on January 14, 2005.

It sent data back to Earth for about 90 minutes. It used the Cassini orbiter as a relay to pass the news home.

Scientists began planning this trip as far back as 1982. They wanted a joint mission between Europe and the United States. The mission was named after two famous astronomers. Giovanni Cassini discovered Saturn's ring divisions and four moons. Christiaan Huygens was the person who discovered Titan.

The spacecraft launched on October 15, 1997. It flew on a Titan IVB/Centaur rocket from Cape Canaveral.

The trip to Saturn took almost seven years of traveling through space. Once it arrived, Cassini stayed in orbit for 13 years. The mission was very expensive, costing about $3.26 billion. NASA paid $2.6 billion of that total. The mission was extended several times to study the planet even longer.

Cassini did many amazing things during its long stay. It studied the shape and movement of Saturn's rings.

The Cassini–Huygens mission was a massive, international space research project. It aimed to study the planet Saturn and its entire system. This system includes the planet's rings and its many natural satellites, or moons. The mission was a collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Italian Space Agency (ASI). It was a Flagship-class mission, which means it was one of the most important and expensive projects in space exploration.

The spacecraft was actually made of two distinct parts. The first part was the Cassini orbiter, which was built by NASA. The second part was the Huygens probe, which was developed by the ESA. The orbiter was designed to circle Saturn and collect data from a distance. The Huygens probe was designed to land on Titan, which is Saturn's largest moon.

The journey took almost seven years of traveling through deep space. During this transit, the craft performed flybys of Venus, Earth, the asteroid 2685 Masursky, and Jupiter. On July 1, 2004, Cassini finally entered orbit around Saturn. On December 25, 2004, the Huygens probe separated from the orbiter using a Spin/Eject device (SED). This device provided a specific separation speed and a spin rate of 7.5 rpm. Huygens then used a parachute to land on Titan on January 14, 2005. It sent data back to Earth for about 90 minutes by using the Cassini orbiter as a relay.

Scientists had many specific goals for this mission. They wanted to understand the three-dimensional structure and movement of Saturn's rings. They also studied the composition of the surfaces of various moons. One goal was to find the nature of the dark material on the moon Iapetus.

The mission also looked at the magnetosphere, which is the magnetic field surrounding the planet. Scientists studied the atmosphere of Saturn at cloud level and the clouds on Titan.

The planning for this mission began as early as 1982. It involved scientists and individuals from 27 different countries. The mission was named after two famous astronomers. The mission lasted much longer than the original plan. Planners first scheduled the mission to last only four years. However, it was extended to the Cassini Equinox Mission, which lasted until 2010. It was then extended a second time as the Cassini Solstice Mission. This final extension lasted until September 15, 2017. During this time, Cassini performed 155 revolutions around the planet. It also completed 54 flybys of Titan and 11 flybys of Enceladus.

At the end of its life, Cassini performed a "Grand Finale." This involved making risky passes through the gaps between Saturn and its inner rings. This phase was designed to maximize scientific results before the spacecraft ran out of power. To protect the moons, NASA intentionally crashed Cassini into Saturn's upper atmosphere. This prevented the spacecraft from accidentally hitting a moon. Scientists wanted to avoid contaminating moons that might have environments where life could exist.

Even though the spacecraft is gone, scientists continue to analyze the data it sent back.
