Voyager 1 is equipped with 11 specialized scientific instruments to analyze celestial objects. The Imaging Science System (ISS) used a two-camera system to capture images of planets and moons. These cameras utilized various filters to see different wavelengths, such as ultraviolet and green light. 
The history of the mission began with a 1960s proposal for a "Grand Tour" of the outer planets. NASA started working on the mission in the early 1970s. Initially, the spacecraft was planned as part of the Mariner program and named Mariner 11. Due to budget cuts, the mission was scaled back to focus on Jupiter and Saturn. It was renamed Voyager when the design began to differ significantly from previous Mariner missions. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) was responsible for building the spacecraft. 
During its primary mission, Voyager 1 achieved several historic milestones. It performed flybys of Jupiter and Saturn, providing the first detailed images of many of their moons. NASA prioritized a flyby of Saturn's moon, Titan, because it possesses a substantial atmosphere. 
Powering a machine so far from the Sun requires a unique energy source. Voyager 1 uses three radioisotope thermoelectric generators, known as RTGs. 
Maintaining a spacecraft millions of miles away requires constant ingenuity from engineers. In 2017, the team successfully fired the trajectory correction maneuver (TCM) thrusters for the first time since 1980. This action helped extend the mission by several years. Even when hardware fails, scientists find ways to adapt. In 2024, engineers successfully re-established communication after an onboard computer issue. They achieved this by moving code away from a broken memory chip in the Flight Data Subsystem. This resilience allows Voyager 1 to continue its journey as a lonely messenger from Earth.
