She is a Nobel laureate. This is a very big prize for science.

Carolyn studies sugars on the surface of cells. These sugars are called glycans. They act like a coating. This coating helps cells talk to each other. It also helps them recognize each other.

She found a new way to study these sugars. She calls this bioorthogonal chemistry. This means she can change molecules inside a living thing. She does this without stopping the cell's normal work. This is very important for science.

Her work helps us understand many diseases. She studies cancer and viruses like COVID-19. Her lab even made a fast test for tuberculosis. This is a sickness in the lungs.

Carolyn went to Harvard University. Later, she earned her Ph.D. at UC Berkeley. She now teaches at Stanford University. She has also started many companies to help make new medicines. Her work helps doctors fight disease in new ways.
