Cappadocia is a famous historical region located in central Anatolia, Turkey.

Most of this area sits within the province of Nevşehir. It is surrounded by many different lands and mountains. To the south, the Taurus Mountains separate it from the sea. To the east, the upper Euphrates river marks a boundary. The region is a high plateau that sits over 1,000 meters high.

This high place has a very distinct climate. Summers are hot and dry, while winters are cold and snowy.

The landscape looks like something from a dream. This is because of how the earth was shaped. Long ago, huge volcanoes like Mount Erciyes erupted. They left behind thick layers of volcanic ash and rock. Over millions of years, wind and water began to wear the rock away. This process is called erosion. It carved the soft rock into strange shapes called fairy chimneys.

Some rocks, like those at Uçhisar, are harder and did not wear away as fast. These tall rocks were even used to build castles.

People have a very long history in this land. In the late Bronze Age, it was known as Hatti. It was the home of the Hittite people. Later, the region was part of the Persian Empire. A leader named Ariarathes I even grew the kingdom to the Black Sea.
