It can live in hot, sunny areas with little water.

People use the caper bush for food. They pick the small flower buds. We call these buds capers. People often eat them salted or pickled. They have a very strong taste. This flavor comes from a chemical change inside the bud.

This change makes them taste like mustard or pepper.

You can also eat the fruit. These are called caper berries. They are often eaten as a snack in Greece. If you do not pick the buds, they grow into flowers. These flowers then turn into berries.

Some caper plants have curved thorns. These thorns can scratch people who pick them. Farmers can grow capers from seeds. The seeds can stay asleep for a long time. They need cold weather to wake up and grow. This helps them survive dry seasons.
