You might think this is the furthest north point. However, a small, empty island called Benten-jima is actually further north. It sits to the northwest of the cape. On a clear day, you can see Sakhalin Island from the shore. It sits just across the La Perouse Strait.

There are many different things to see at the cape. You will find more than ten monuments there. One is the Monument of the northernmost Point of Japan. Another is a statue of a man named Mamiya Rinzō. There is also the Monument of Peace. This stone memorial honors people lost at sea. It remembers a submarine with 80 men that sank in 1943. It also honors people on five merchant ships lost that same year.

One monument stands very tall against the sky. It is called the Tower of Prayer. This tower is made of hard granite. It reaches a height of 19.83 metres. The tower was built to remember 269 people. They were on Korean Air Lines Flight 007 in 1983. That plane was shot down by a Soviet aircraft. The event happened near Moneron Island, about 98 kilometres north of the cape.

A small settlement sits just east of the cape. This place is called Sōya Misaki. It has many things that are the northernmost in all of Japan. You can visit the Cape Sōya Lighthouse there. There is also the northernmost gas station. Even the northernmost elementary school is in this area. It is called Ōmisaki Elementary School.

These places make the area very unique for visitors.

The name of this place has a deep history. The Ainu people called this area 'notetu'. In the Ainu language, 'not' means chin. The word 'etu' means nose. This describes the shape of the land. Some people think the name Soya comes from 'so ya'. In Ainu, this means a rocky shore. This name helps us picture the land near the water.
