Cannibalism is when an animal eats its own kind. This happens in more than 1,500 species.

Many animals do this to get extra power. This is helpful when food is hard to find. For example, some tadpoles eat each other to grow fast. Growing big helps them stay safe from other hunters.

Cannibalism also helps control how many animals live in one place. If there are too many animals, they might run out of food or space. Eating some members of the group makes more room for the rest. This can help the group find more shelter.

But there are risks too. Eating your own kind can spread sickness. It can also lead to injury. Some animals might even eat their own family by mistake. In some spiders, the female eats the male during mating. This gives the female more nutrition for her eggs. This can help her babies survive better.
