Cannibalism is when an animal eats another member of its own species. This is a very common way that living things interact in nature. Scientists have found this happening in more than 1,500 different species.

It does not just happen to hunters like lions. It can happen to animals that eat plants or even things that eat dead matter. This behavior can happen in many different places, including the water. One study of 12,000 wild fish showed that only 0.3% of them ate their own kind during their last meals.

This behavior often works as a way to manage a group. When there are too many animals in one spot, they might run out of food or space. By eating some members of the group, there is more room for the others to find shelter and food. This can help the survivors have a better life. However, it can also be risky for the whole group. It might lower the chance of survival for everyone. It can also make it easier for sickness to spread between animals.

Many animals use cannibalism to get extra energy when food is hard to find. For example, female Fletcher's frogs lay eggs in small pools that do not have much food. To stay alive, the tadpoles in that group must eat each other. This gives them the nutrition they need to grow. In wood frogs, tadpoles that eat others grow much faster. Growing big helps them stay safe from predators. It also helps them compete better for resources.

There are also many ways this can happen in the animal world. Sexual cannibalism is when a female eats a male during or after mating. This is common in spiders like the black widow or the redback spider. It is also seen in praying mantises and scorpions. In some spiders, the female eats the male before they even mate. This might happen because the female mistakes the male for food. It can also happen because the extra nutrition helps her produce more offspring.

Sometimes, eating your own kind can lead to serious sickness. In humans, a disease called kuru can happen from eating infected brain tissue. This happened in Papua New Guinea during certain funeral rituals. Kuru is a disease that affects how the brain works. Another example is mad cow disease, which is a disease in cattle. This can spread to humans if they eat contaminated beef. In the water, many different viruses and parasites can also spread this way. This shows how eating others can change how a whole group lives.
