Canadian River

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Canadian River is a very long river. It is the longest part of the Arkansas River. This river stays inside the United States. It starts in the mountains of Colorado. From there, it flows through New Mexico and Texas. Finally, it moves through Oklahoma.

The river has many names. Spanish explorers called it Rio Colorado. Some say the name comes from French traders. These traders camped near the river long ago. Others think the name comes from the Spanish word cañada. This word means a glen or a canyon. The river does make deep canyons in New Mexico and Texas.

Most of the time, the river moves slowly. You might see red mud flats or quicksand. When it rains a lot, the river carries much more water. The river flows into several large lakes. These include Conchas Lake, Ute Lake, and Lake Meredith. The biggest one is Eufaula Lake in Oklahoma. At the end of its journey, the river joins the Arkansas River.
