It began in France in the 1840s. Dancers use many big moves. They lift their skirts and petticoats high. They also do high kicks and cartwheels. Some dancers do a grand écart, which is a jump split.

The dance is hard work for the body. Dancers often scream or yelp while they perform.

In the past, men often danced the can-can in groups. Later, women became very famous performers. Stars like Jane Avril danced at the Moulin Rouge.

Some people thought the dance was scandalous. This was because the high kicks showed more than people expected. In the 1920s, a new style called the "French Cancan" was made. It used a group of dancers called a chorus line. This style combined French and American dance moves. Today, you can still see can-can dancers in Alaska and Canada.
