A small village began here in the year 1877. Two farmers named José Antônio Pereira and Manoel Vieira de Sousa founded it. They came from a place called Minas Gerais. They built the village near the Serra de Maracaju cliffs. The village was first named Santo Antônio de Campo Grande. It sat where two streams, the Prosa and the Segredo, meet.
