A scientist named Bjarne Stroustrup made it. He began his work in 1979 at Bell Labs. He wanted a language that was fast. He also wanted it to help organize big programs.

C++ grew from an older language called C. The name C++ uses a symbol from the C language. This symbol means to increase or add to something.

Stroustrup added new parts to help with large software. One big part is called object-oriented programming. This helps people group parts of a program together.

Today, C++ is used for many big jobs. It helps run video games and web searches. It even helps space probes work in space. Many groups work to keep it updated. This group is called the ISO. They release new versions every few years. The newest version was released in October 2024.
