C++ is a powerful programming language used to give instructions to computers.

It is a high-level language, which means it is designed to be easy for people to read and write. At the same time, it is a general-purpose tool. This means it can be used to build almost anything. People use it to make big systems like Windows or Linux. It is also great for things that need to be very fast. This includes video games, web searches, and even space probes.

This language works by using a process called compilation. A compiler is a special tool that turns the code a human writes into instructions the computer understands. Many different groups make these compilers, such as Microsoft, Intel, and IBM. C++ is special because it offers two main things at once. It allows direct access to computer hardware, just like the older C language. It also uses abstractions, which are ways to organize code into neat, logical parts. These parts help programmers manage very large and complex projects without getting lost.

A scientist named Bjarne Stroustrup created C++.

He began his work in 1979 at AT&T Bell Labs. At that time, he was working on his PhD thesis. He noticed that some languages were good for organizing code but were too slow. Other languages were very fast but too hard to use for big projects. He wanted to combine the speed of the C language with better organization. He called his early version "C with Classes." By 1982, he named it C++. The name uses the "++" symbol, which means to increase a value in the C language.

C++ has a long history of updates and rules. The International Organization for Standardization, or ISO, manages these rules. The first official standard, known as C++98, came out in 1998. Since then, there have been many updates like C++11, C++17, and C++20.

Since 2012, the language has followed a schedule of releasing a new version every three years. The most recent version was published in October 2024. This version is called C++23. The next big update will be C++26.

You can see C++ working in many places every day. It helps run the servers that handle e-commerce and large databases. It is used in desktop applications on your computer. Even telephone switches use it to work properly.

Because it allows programmers to manage memory manually, they must be very careful. If they make a mistake, it can cause bugs or security risks. However, its ability to be both fast and flexible makes it one of the most important tools in the world of technology.
