Ada is a high-level programming language built for safety. It is used to create very large and complex software systems.

This language is special because it focuses on being reliable. It is often used in critical systems where mistakes are dangerous. These include things like air traffic control or railway systems. It is also used in banking and space technology. Because it is so dependable, it helps prevent serious accidents.

Ada works by catching errors before they cause trouble. It uses a tool called a compiler to check the code. The compiler looks for mistakes while the programmer is still writing. This is called compile-time checking. It can find errors like misspelled words or wrong math. Ada also uses run-time checking to catch problems while a program runs. This includes checking for errors like buffer overflows or memory issues. By finding these bugs early, the language keeps systems running smoothly.

The history of Ada began in the 1970s. At that time, the United States Department of Defense used many languages. They used over 450 different programming languages for their projects. This was a very hard job to manage. A group called the High Order Language Working Group was formed. They wanted to find one single language to replace them all. They created a set of requirements called the Steelman requirements. These rules focused on making software that was efficient and easy to maintain.

A team led by Jean Ichbiah won the contest to design Ada. He worked for a company called Honeywell. The design process took place between 1977 and 1983. The language was named after Ada Lovelace. She lived from 1815 to 1852 and was the first computer programmer.

In 1995, a new version called Ada 95 was released. S. Tucker Taft designed this version to improve the language. It added support for object-oriented programming. This helped the language work better with modern computer systems.

You can see how Ada is like a well-organized library. It uses things called packages to keep code in neat groups. This is known as modular programming. Ada also uses English words like "begin" and "end" instead of many symbols. This makes the code much easier for humans to read. It is also an international technical standard. This means organizations like the ISO and IEC help define it. Today, programmers use tools like GNAT to help them write Ada code. It remains a strong choice for building important technology.
