It is a programming language. This is a set of rules for writing computer code. Fortran helps computers solve hard math problems. Scientists use it for many big jobs. They use it to study the weather. They also use it to study the ocean.

Some people use it to study space and black holes.

A man named John Backus started the project at IBM. He wanted to make writing programs easier. In the old days, people used punched cards.

They would punch code into cards. Then, a machine would read the cards. These cards had special rules for columns. For example, a letter in the first column meant something special.

Fortran has changed a lot over many years. New versions added new ways to work. It can now do many tasks at once. This is called parallel computing. Today, Fortran is still used by the fastest supercomputers in the world.
