Fortran is a high-level, compiled programming language. It was built specifically for numeric computation and scientific computing.

While many languages are designed for general tasks, Fortran focuses on solving complex mathematical problems. It belongs to the third generation of programming languages. This means it is more readable and closer to human language than older, machine-level code. Today, it remains a vital tool for high-performance computing. It is even used to rank the world's fastest supercomputers.

To understand how Fortran works, we must look at the compiler. A compiler is a special program that translates human-written code into machine code. The first Fortran compilers were very complex. They had to turn mathematical formulas into efficient instructions for the computer hardware. Early versions used a method called a Monte Carlo simulation to optimize code. This involved using a random number generator to predict how a program might run. By doing this, the compiler could place blocks of code in the most efficient order in the computer's memory.

Fortran has moved through many distinct stages and versions. The two most significant early versions were FORTRAN II and FORTRAN IV. In 1966, the American National Standards Institute, or ANSI, created a standard for the language. This prevented different manufacturers from using slightly different rules, which made the language more consistent. Later versions added powerful new features. Fortran 77 introduced structured programming. Fortran 90 brought array and modular programming. Fortran 95 added support for parallel computing. More recent versions, like Fortran 2003 and 2008, added object-oriented and concurrent programming capabilities.

The history of Fortran began with a desire for efficiency. In December 1953, John Backus proposed the project at IBM. He wanted a practical alternative to assembly language. Backus admitted he wanted to make programming easier because he found writing programs tedious. He led a team of many programmers to complete the task. A draft specification was ready by November 1954. The first reference manual was released in October 1956. The first working compiler arrived in April 1957. For his massive contribution, Backus received the A.M. Turing Award in 1977.

In the early years, the physical way people wrote code was very different. Programmers used 80-column punched cards to enter their work.

Each line of code occupied one card. These cards followed a strict fixed-column format. Columns 1 through 5 were reserved for labels. Column 6 was used for continuation, telling the machine a line continued from the previous card. Columns 7 through 72 contained the actual statement. Columns 73 through 80 were often used for identification or sequence numbers. This format was a direct result of the limitations of early card readers and computers.

Fortran's significance is seen in its massive reach within the scientific community. By 1963, over 40 different Fortran compilers existed for various machines. At that time, more than 220,000 Fortran manuals had already been distributed. The language is specifically suited for technical applications. For example, the inclusion of a complex number data type made it excellent for electrical engineering. It is also used for heavy-duty tasks like numerical weather prediction and plasma physics. It helps scientists study everything from crystallography to computational chemistry.
