Building design

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

People use many skills to design buildings. This is called building design. It uses art and math to make plans.

Large projects need many experts. An architect is a lead person. They plan and watch the building work. This helps keep the public safe. Architects must go to school. They also do a practicum. A practicum is hands-on training.

Other experts help on big jobs. Building engineers work on power and parts. They focus on electric and mechanical systems. They also help with structural parts.

Smaller jobs use different people. A building designer may design a single home. They may not be a licensed architect. In the U.S., some are called residential designers.

Draftspersons also help. They make construction documents. These are the paper plans for building. Some draftspersons work for big firms. Others work for themselves. In the U.K., building surveyors help too. They work on small homes and shops. They can also make lists of costs for new work.
