Designers make outdoor spaces look beautiful. They also make them work well. They plan where plants grow. They also plan where hard things go. These hard parts are called hardscape. The living parts, like plants, are called softscape.

Designers must study many things. They look at the soil and the sun. They think about how water moves through the ground. They also think about how people walk through the space. Some designers use computer tools to plan. Others draw their ideas by hand.

In the past, people learned by working with a master.

A famous designer was André Le Nôtre. He learned from his father. He later designed the great Gardens of Versailles. Today, many people go to college to learn. They study plants and how to build things. Some people work as landscape architects. These experts plan big city parks. Other people work as landscape designers. They focus on the art of the garden. Gardens are never truly finished. They keep changing as they grow.
