General contractor

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A general contractor leads a building project. In the United States, people often call them a contractor. They manage the work on a construction site every day. They make sure the project stays on schedule. They also help the project stay on budget.

Some contractors work alone. They might do some of the carpentry work themselves. Other contractors are part of very large companies. These big companies can manage projects worth billions of dollars.

To start, a contractor looks at project plans. These plans might come from an architect. An architect is a person who designs buildings. The contractor then gives a price for the work. This price includes the cost of tools and wood. It also includes the cost of labor, which is the work people do.

Contractors often hire subcontractors. Subcontractors are workers who do special jobs. For example, they might do plumbing or electrical work. The general contractor must watch these workers closely. They make sure the work is high quality. They also make sure everyone stays safe on the site. They must follow many rules to do this job well.
