A bugle is a simple brass instrument used for signaling. It has a wide, cone-shaped body called a bore. Most bugles do not have valves to change notes. Instead, players control the pitch with their breath and lips. This method is called embouchure. Because they lack valves, bugles play notes from a natural harmonic series.

Making music with a bugle requires great skill. A player must change how they blow to find different notes. Standard bugle calls often use five specific notes. This is known as the bugle scale. The instrument is very useful because its sound can travel far. This makes it perfect for sending messages across large areas.

History shows that horns have changed many times. Long ago, people made horns from animal parts like ox or cow horns. They also used shells or ivory. Later, people began using metal tubes. This technology comes from the Roman Empire and the Middle East. In the 1400s, makers learned to bend metal tubes without breaking them. This led to many new shapes, like the sickle-shaped hunting horn.

Many different types of bugles have existed through the years. In the 18th century, Germans made a half-moon horn called the halbmondbläser. By 1800, these were bent into loops. They were used by light infantry from Hanover starting in 1758. In 1811, Joseph Halliday patented the Kent bugle in England. This keyed bugle became very popular in military bands. It was used widely until about 1850.

Today, the bugle is still very important in the military. It helps soldiers follow their daily routines in camp. Buglers can give marching orders or call soldiers to assemble. Some calls, like Taps or the Last Post, are very special. They signal the end of the day or honor soldiers at funerals. Bugles are also used by Boy Scout troops. They can even be a sign of peace during a surrender.
