A bugle is a simple brass instrument. It is used to send signals. Most bugles do not have valves. Valves are parts that change notes. Instead, players change the sound with their breath. They do this with their lips and air.

Long ago, horns were made from animal parts. People used ox or cow horns. Later, they made horns from metal tubes. This metal work comes from old times. Europeans saw metal trumpets in the Middle East. They brought these ideas back home. By the 1400s, people learned to bend metal tubes. This made the instruments easier to carry. One old shape was a half-moon horn.

Bugles are very important in the military. They help soldiers know their daily routines. A bugle call can tell a camp to march. It can also signal the end of the day. Some calls are played at funerals. They show respect for a soldier. Bugles can even be a sign of peace.

There are many kinds of bugles. Some play high notes. Others play low notes. We call these soprano, alto, baritone, and contrabass.
