A player makes sound by buzzing their lips in a mouthpiece. Most tubas use four or five valves to change notes. Some models even have six valves.

People made the first tuba in 1835 in Prussia. It was made by Wilhelm Friedrich Wieprecht and Johann Gottfried Moritz. They wanted a deep sound for military bands. Later, Adolphe Sax made saxhorns in France. These helped shape modern brass bands.

Some tubas are made to be carried. The sousaphone wraps around the player's body.

This makes it easy to march. In early jazz, players used the tuba for a steady beat. Later, jazz players like Bill Barber used it in cool jazz. Some tubas are very special. The "Chicago Yorks" were made in 1933. They have a very rich sound. Some say they are the greatest tubas ever made.
