The trombone is a brass instrument.

You make sound by buzzing your lips in a mouthpiece. This makes the air inside the instrument vibrate. Most trombones use a telescoping slide to change notes. This is different from other brass instruments that use valves.

Some special versions, like the valve trombone, do use valves.

The name trombone comes from Italian words. It means "large trumpet."

Long ago, people called it a sackbut. In the 1500s, players used it in dance bands. Some players even stood in city towers. They used the sound to welcome important guests. This showed the city was strong and rich.

Today, you might see tenor or bass trombones. The tenor model is the most common.
