The horn is a beautiful brass instrument.

It is made of long tubing wrapped into a tight coil. A large, wide bell sits at one end. This bell faces backward toward the player. This design helps the horn make a soft, subdued sound. This is very different from the piercing sound of a trumpet.

Musicians who play this instrument are called hornists. They use the horn to play many different melodies in orchestras and bands.

Playing the horn takes a lot of skill. A hornist uses their lungs to blow air through the instrument. They also use their lip muscles, which is called the embouchure.

The player places a mouthpiece against their lips. Usually, two-thirds of the mouthpiece sits on the upper lip. To play higher notes, players might press the mouthpiece harder. However, too much pressure can make the sound harsh. It can also make the player tire out more quickly.

Long ago, people used actual animal horns to make sounds.

One example is the shofar, which is a ram's horn used in Jewish rituals. Early metal horns were simple tubes with no valves. These were called hunting horns. Players changed notes by using their lips or by putting a hand inside the bell. They also used metal tubes called crooks to change the key.

These crooks were different lengths of tubing.

Many changes happened to the horn over time. In 1818, Heinrich Stölzel and Friedrich Blümel made the first valved horn.

Later, François Périnet invented piston valves around 1839. Most modern players use a double horn. Fritz Kruspe introduced this version in 1897. A double horn has a special thumb valve. This allows the player to switch between different sets of tubing. This helps them play a wide range of over four octaves.

There are many different types of horns today. Some are single horns, which are lighter and easier for students.

Others are double or even triple horns. A triple horn has five valves and can play in even more keys. The German horn is very popular in orchestras because it sounds warm and dark.

The French style of horn sounds light and brilliant. Whether it is a single horn or a complex triple horn, each one has its own special voice.
