Their main job is to bring a buyer and a seller together. They act as a third person to make the deal happen. This role is called a facilitator. A broker helps find the best match for a deal. They use special tools and resources to find many people. This helps them reach a very large group of buyers and sellers.

Brokers work in a specific way to help their clients. They often look at market research and market data. This information helps people understand what things are worth. A broker might represent the seller or the buyer. Most of the time, they do not represent both at once. They screen people to find the perfect match for a sale. This makes the whole process much smoother for everyone involved.

The history of the word "broker" is quite interesting. It comes from an Old French word called "broceur." This word meant a small trader. It might also come from the word "brocheor." That word meant a person who sold wine. It comes from a verb that means to broach a keg. This shows how trading has been around for a long time.

There are many different kinds of brokers in our world. A real estate broker helps people buy or sell property. A stockbroker helps people trade stocks in a market. Some brokers are called discount brokers. They charge a smaller commission for their work. They might offer less advice than a full service firm. Other types include freight brokers, insurance brokers, and even yacht brokers.

Rules help keep the world of brokers fair and safe. These rules change based on where a broker works. In the United States, special groups watch over stockbrokers. One group is the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Another group is called the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, or FINRA.

These groups make sure brokers follow the laws. This helps everyone feel safe when they make a deal.
