Wholesaling

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Wholesaling is an important way that goods move around the world. Instead of selling to a single person, wholesalers sell in bulk to other businesses. These businesses might be shops, or they could be large industrial companies. Wholesalers often buy items in huge amounts directly from the makers. Because they buy so much at once, they get a lower price. Then, they sell these goods to retailers at a higher price. This helps retailers make a profit when they sell to you.

Wholesalers do many different jobs to help the system work smoothly. They often act as a bridge between many makers and many buyers. One main task is called breaking bulk, which means splitting large shipments into smaller lots. They also sort, grade, and repack goods to match what buyers need. Some wholesalers use a cold chain to keep food at the right temperature. They might also store goods in large warehouses or deliver them to customers. This reduces the friction that happens when moving things from place to place.

This way of trading has a very long history. In medieval Europe, merchant guilds helped organize long-distance trade. These groups protected their members and helped set rules for selling goods. Before 1850, wholesale merchants were vital connectors who provided financing and storage. As the telegraph and railroads arrived, national markets began to grow. In the 20th century, many cities built formal wholesale markets for food. For example, the Osaka Central Wholesale Market opened in November 1931.

Many big changes happened in the last hundred years to make trade faster. In April 1956, the ship Ideal X sailed with standardized containers. This helped create the modern global supply chains we use today. In 1964, METRO Cash & Carry started a new model in Germany. This allowed business customers to pick goods and pay right away. In 1971, Walmart opened its first distribution center in Arkansas. Then, in 1974, the first barcode was scanned in Troy, Ohio.

Today, wholesaling is changing because of new technology. Many wholesalers now use the internet and digital tools to work. They use e-procurement to order goods and send electronic bills. This is called business-to-business or B2B commerce. Some huge markets still exist in physical places too. The Yiwu International Trade City in China is a major hub for small goods. Mexico City has the Central de Abasto, which is a very large market.
