His journey into acting began very early in his life. Crawford was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1911. Both of his parents were performers in vaudeville, which is a type of traveling stage show. He even performed on stage with them for a producer named Max Gordon. After a short time at Harvard College, he left to work as a stevedore on the New York docks. He later returned to acting in radio and on the Broadway stage. In 1932, he played a footballer in a play in London.

Crawford found his biggest movie success in the late 1940s. In 1949, he played a character named Willie Stark in the film All the King's Men. This character was based on a real politician from Louisiana named Huey Long. The movie was a huge hit with audiences everywhere. Because of his great performance, Crawford won an Academy Award for Best Actor. He also won a Golden Globe Award for this same role. This was a very important moment in his life.

In the 1950s, Crawford became a household name through television. He starred in a popular crime drama called Highway Patrol from 1955 to 1959. He played a hard-as-nails police officer named Dan Mathews. The show used realistic dialogue and a dark film noir style. Producer Frederick Ziv hired him for this leading role. The show was so successful that it stayed popular for many years. It even continued to be shown in reruns across the United States.

Crawford's life had both bright moments and some difficult struggles. He dealt with heavy drinking and health issues like strokes. These challenges sometimes made his work life hard. However, he had many talented friends like actor Stuart Whitman. Whitman helped him stay focused during certain film shoots. Crawford passed away in 1986 at the age of 74. He left behind a big legacy with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. One star honors his movies, and the other honors his television work.
