This area has two main parts. The first is called area 44. This part helps you plan how to move your mouth to speak. It also helps you build sentences using grammar. The second part is called area 45. This part helps you find the right words. It helps you understand what words mean.

Broca's area also helps you understand sounds. It can even help you understand hand gestures. Some people have trouble if this part is hurt. They may have a condition called aphasia. This makes it hard to speak clearly. They might say only a few words at a time. For example, they might say "Store. Mom." instead of a full sentence. However, the brain is very smart. If this part is hurt slowly, other parts can learn to help. This is called plasticity. It helps the brain keep working.
