Broca's area

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Your brain has a special region used for talking. This part is called Broca's area. It sits in the front part of your brain. Most people have this area on the left side. It helps you turn your thoughts into spoken words. Without it, speaking can become a very hard job.

This area works in a few different ways. It has two main sections called area 44 and area 45. Area 44 helps with the movement of speech. It helps you plan how to make sounds. It also helps you build grammar and structure. Area 45 helps you find the right words. It helps you understand the meaning of what you hear.

A scientist named Pierre Paul Broca found this area. He studied two patients who could not speak well. They had injuries to a part of their brain. This part of the brain is called the inferior frontal gyrus. Because of his work, the area has his name. People call the speech trouble he found Broca's aphasia. This is also called expressive aphasia.

Scientists use many tools to study these brain parts. They use fMRI to see the brain in action. They also use a tool called rTMS. This tool can briefly disrupt how a part of the brain works. In one study, rTMS slowed down people doing word tasks. In another study, it slowed down people doing sound tasks. These tests show exactly which part does which job.

Broca's area does more than just help you talk. It also helps you understand hand gestures. It can even help you understand how others move. If this area is hurt, speech might sound like a telegram. A person might say "Drive, store. Mom." instead of a full sentence. However, the brain has a way to fix itself. This is called plasticity. Nearby parts can sometimes learn to take over.
