Broad Breasted White

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Broad Breasted White is a very popular turkey breed. Most people use it for food production. It is the most widely used breed in commercial farming. This bird is special because it grows a lot of meat. Its white feathers also help it look clean when prepared.

These turkeys have a unique way they grow. They have very large breasts. Their breast bones are actually quite short. This can make it hard for them to breed on their own. Humans often help them through artificial insemination. This is a way to help them make more birds.

This breed has a long history in farming. It became the main breed in the 1960s. It was made by cross-breeding two other birds. These were the Broad Breasted Bronze and the White Holland. It replaced the Beltsville Small White for home cooking. It also took over for the Bronze breed in big farms.

These birds grow to be quite huge. Most weigh between 38 and 40 pounds. Some birds can grow even larger than 40 pounds. They live in large barns with many machines. One barn can hold as many as 10,000 birds.

Being so large changes how they live. These turkeys like to eat a lot. They also like to sit still. Because of this, they are flightless birds. Being very heavy can cause health problems. This can lead to heart disease or joint damage. Even birds that are pardoned often have short lives.
