British Sign Language

British Sign Language, or BSL, is a visual language used in the United Kingdom. It is the first or preferred language for many in the UK Deaf community. While many think of language as spoken sounds, BSL uses movement and space to communicate. The British Deaf Association estimates that 151,000 people use BSL in the UK. Of these users, approximately 87,000 are Deaf. Hearing people also use the language to talk with relatives or to work as professional interpreters.

Communicating in BSL is a full-body experience. It involves the movement of the hands, the face, the head, and the body. Signers use the space around them to express complex ideas. The language also includes unique "sign names" for individuals. These signs are often based on a person's physical features or personality. However, rules exist to ensure no sign refers to something disagreeable about a person.

BSL is organized through specific linguistic structures. A 1992 dictionary shows that signs are not ordered alphabetically like English. Instead, they are grouped by phonological characteristics. This means signs are categorized by handshapes. For example, all signs using a "fist" handshape are grouped together. These are followed by signs that use an "open hand" shape. This system helps users understand the physical mechanics of the language.

History shows that signing has been part of British life for centuries. A legal document from 1324 mentions a Deaf man using signs for property matters. In 1576, a marriage record describes a man named Thomas Tilsye using signs to express his mind. He used his arms, hands, and even his feet to communicate during the ceremony. By 1760, Thomas Braidwood founded an academy for Deaf children in Edinburgh. This was likely the first school of its kind in Britain.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, different teaching methods began to shape the language. The Braidwood Academy used a system called the "English method." This was a mix of oral communication and manual signing. Later, a teacher named Joseph Watson advocated for "natural signing." This method focused on how Deaf children naturally sign rather than following English grammar. These early educational efforts helped create the foundations of modern BSL.

Today, BSL has significant legal and social status. On March 18, 2003, the UK government formally recognized BSL as a language. Later, in 2022, the British Sign Language Act was passed. This law legally recognized BSL in England, Wales, and Scotland. The language is also moving into formal education. Authorities are currently working to develop GCSE qualifications for BSL in England and Wales.

BSL is also highly visible in modern media. Many television channels use "in-vision signing," where a signer appears on screen. For example, the BBC provides signed news broadcasts at specific times each weekday. In 2024, over 10% of Channel 4's programming included signing. This included popular shows like Gogglebox and Hollyoaks. There is even a dedicated channel called LumoTV that focuses on sign language.

Finally, BSL is part of a global family of sign languages, though it is unique. It is quite different from American Sign Language (ASL). Only 31% of their signs are identical, and only 44% are cognate. BSL is also distinct from Irish Sign Language (ISL). However, BSL has had a massive global impact. The sign languages used in Australia and New Zealand evolved from 19th-century BSL. They still use the same manual alphabet and grammar used in the UK today.
