British Sign Language, or BSL, is a beautiful way to communicate. It is a real language used throughout the United Kingdom. Many people in the Deaf community use it as their main language. The British Deaf Association estimates that 151,000 people use BSL in the UK. Out of these users, about 87,000 are Deaf.

Hearing people also use it to talk with Deaf relatives or friends. Some people even learn it to work as professional interpreters. It is a vital tool for connection and belonging.

Using BSL is a very active experience for the body. You do not just use your hands to make signs. You also use your face, your head, and your whole body. This movement helps you show exactly what you mean. The language uses the space around you to share ideas.

For example, a dictionary from 1992 shows signs using pictures. These signs are grouped by how the hands look. One group might use a "fist" shape, while another uses an "open hand."

History shows that signing has been used for a very long time. Records from 1324 mention a Deaf man using signs for legal matters. In 1576, a marriage record describes a man using many signs. He used his arms and hands to show his feelings. He even used his feet to make signs during the ceremony.

Later, in 1760, Thomas Braidwood started a school for Deaf children. This was likely the first school of its kind in Britain. These early methods helped shape the BSL we know today.

Today, BSL is recognized by law in many places. In 2022, the British Sign Language Act was passed. This law legally recognized BSL in England, Wales, and Scotland. You can see BSL on many television channels too. Some shows have a person signing in a small box on the screen.

In 2024, over 10% of Channel 4's shows were signed. This includes popular programs like Hollyoaks and Gogglebox.

It is interesting to see how BSL relates to other languages. BSL is quite different from American Sign Language. Only about 31% of their signs are the same. It is also different from Irish Sign Language. However, BSL has influenced other places far away. Sign languages in Australia and New Zealand grew from 19th-century BSL. They even use the same manual alphabet.
