It is made of white limestone. The bridge has windows with stone bars. It goes over the Rio di Palazzo canal. This bridge connects a palace to a new prison. Antonio Contin designed the bridge. It was built around the year 1600.

People call it the Bridge of Sighs. This name comes from the Italian name, Ponte dei Sospiri. Lord Byron gave it the English name in the 1800s. He thought prisoners would sigh at the view. They saw the beautiful city through the windows. Then they went down to their cells.

Many artists use the bridge in their work. Jacques Offenbach wrote an opera with this name. The bridge is in many songs, too. One story says that love will last forever. This happens if a couple kisses in a gondola. They must be under the bridge at sunset. They must also hear the church bells toll. An architect in Pittsburgh even used the bridge for ideas. He made a similar bridge at a jail there.
