A breakup is when a relationship ends.

This can happen with romantic partners. It can also happen with friends. People use different words for this. If a married couple splits, it is a divorce. If a couple is engaged, it is a broken engagement.

Experts have many ideas about how this happens. Mark L. Knapp made a model about it. He says relationships have two phases. One phase is coming together. The other phase is coming apart. In the second phase, people notice big differences. They might start to pull apart. They might even try to stay away from each other. This leads to the end.

Breakups can be very hard. People may feel sad, angry, or lonely. They might have trouble sleeping. Some people feel very upset for a long time. This can change how they see themselves.

But breakups can also lead to growth. Some people learn new ways to connect with others. They may feel relief or freedom. Knowing why a relationship ended can help people feel better in the long run.
