A breakup is the end of a relationship between people.

People often use the word "dumping" when one person decides to end things. For married couples, this is usually called a divorce or a separation. If a couple is engaged to be married, it is called a broken engagement. While many people think of romance, breakups can also happen with friends. These are called platonic breakups and often happen when a friendship fails. Some researchers say these endings can be very painful for people involved.

Experts have many ideas about how relationships fall apart. Mark L. Knapp created a model to show these stages. He said relationships have two main parts: coming together and coming apart. In the coming apart phase, people start to notice big differences. This leads to a stage called circumscribing, where people set boundaries. They might even reach a stage called stagnation. This is when people stay together for reasons like having children. Eventually, they reach avoidance and then the final termination.

Other researchers have found different ways to look at these changes. In 1976, a sociologist named Diane Vaughan proposed the uncoupling theory. She said there is often a turning point in a relationship. This is a precise moment when someone knows it is truly over. Vaughan noted that the person who starts the breakup might feel differently. They may have already started to imagine a life alone. The other person then has to catch up and redefine themselves. This process can take a long time for some people.

Breakups can cause many hard feelings and difficult changes. People might feel intense grief, sadness, or even anger. Some people struggle with sleeplessness or feel very depressed. They might also experience intrusive memories of their former partner. This can lead to a lower sense of self-esteem. In some cases, people might even act in ways that are unhealthy. This includes things like using too much alcohol or feeling very paranoid. These reactions show how much a breakup can impact a person's well-being.

Even though breakups are hard, they can lead to good things. This is sometimes called stress-related growth. People can learn how to view themselves in new ways. They might also find better ways to connect with others later on. A study by Jessica Kansky and Joseph P. Allen looked at young adults. They found that some people experienced positive changes in the long run. This was especially true if they understood why the relationship ended. Knowing the reason can help people find relief and freedom.
