Brain death is a very serious medical state. It means the brain has lost all function. This loss is permanent. It cannot be reversed.

In brain death, the whole brain stops working. This includes the brainstem. The brainstem is a part that helps the body breathe. Without it, a person cannot breathe on their own. Machines called life support can help the body. These machines do the work of breathing.

Doctors must be very careful when they check for brain death. They want to be sure the brain cannot work again. They look for signs. They check if the eyes react to light. They check for reflexes. They may also use an EEG. An EEG is a test that looks at brain activity. In brain death, the EEG may show a flat line.

Sometimes, a body might move even after brain death. These are called reflexes. They come from the spinal cord, not the brain. They do not mean the brain is working. In some places, doctors can use organs from a brain-dead person. This is called organ donation. It can help other sick people. [Caption: A scan showing no blood flow in the brain.]
