A braid is a special pattern made by interlacing several strands together.

You can use many flexible materials like hair, textile yarn, or even metal wire. The most common version is a simple, flat structure with three strands. However, people can use many more strands to make complex shapes. These include the fishtail braid, the French braid, or the waterfall braid.

Each strand zigzags through the others to create a long and narrow shape. This is a bit like weaving, but with a different way of moving the strands.

Braiding is a very old skill that people have used for a long time. Some of the oldest examples come from tiny statues made thousands of years ago. The Venus of Willendorf is a figurine from about 28,000 to 25,000 BC. It may show the very first known way of braiding hair. Another old piece is the Venus of Brassempouy from France. It is about 25,000 years old and shows a braided hairstyle. Many different cultures around the world use braids, so they do not have just one single origin.

In many places, braiding hair is a way for people to be together.

Because it takes time to braid hair, it becomes a social art. Elders often start by making simple knots for young children. Then, older children watch and learn the traditional designs. They might even practice on younger children as they grow. This helps create a strong bond between the older and younger generations. It is a way to pass down traditions and spend time with family.

People use different materials based on what they find in their local area. In South America, people used fine fibers from alpaca or llama wool. In North America, people used fibers from bison. In China, Korea, and Japan, silk is still a main material for braiding. In rural Australia, people have a tradition of plaiting kangaroo leather. This makes useful items like belts, hatbands, and dog leads. For many people, braiding was a practical way to make decorative textiles.

Braids are also very useful for making strong things. Braided ropes are great for rock climbers and sailors because they do not twist easily.

Some special ropes, called Kernmantle ropes, use a braided jacket to hold inner cords. Braids are even used in big machines and jet aircraft. Metal braids can cover fuel pipes or protect electrical cables from interference. You can even see the word used to describe nature. Some river systems look braided when small streams join and split apart.
