Body piercing

language culture Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Body piercing is a form of body modification. It involves puncturing or cutting a part of the human body. This creates an opening where jewelry can be worn. It can also create a space for an implant. An implant is an object placed under the skin. These might be made of gold, platinum, titanium, or medical grade steel.

Piercings can change a person's skin profile or appearance. The term piercing can refer to the act itself. It can also refer to the opening or the jewelry used. People use piercings for many different reasons. Some seek spiritual or religious meaning. Others use them for self-expression or aesthetic value. Some people pierce to conform to a culture. Others pierce to rebel against it.

Modern body piercing is an invasive procedure. This means it enters the body and carries certain risks. These risks include allergic reactions or infections. A person might also experience excessive scarring or physical injuries. To minimize these problems, practitioners emphasize sanitary procedures. They also emphasize careful aftercare.

Contemporary practices use specialized tools. These tools are developed specifically for safe piercing. Healing times vary depending on the location of the piercing. A genital piercing might heal in as little as one month. In contrast, a navel piercing can take up to two full years to heal. Some piercings are more complicated and may face rejection by the body.

Ear piercing is one of the most widespread practices. Archaeological evidence shows it has existed for thousands of years. The oldest mummified remains ever discovered had earrings. This was Ötzi the Iceman, who lived over 5,300 years ago.

Earrings were also found in the Sumerian city of Ur, dating to 2500 BCE. The Bible mentions earrings in several places. For example, the book of Exodus describes making a golden calf from melted earrings. In the Tlingit culture of the Pacific Northwest, earrings signaled nobility and wealth. In ancient Egypt, gold hoop earrings were common during the Eighteenth dynasty. In Europe, earrings for women fell out of fashion between the 4th and 16th centuries. However, they returned to vogue in places like Italy and England. During the 16th century, earrings were often more common among men than women.

Nose piercing has a similarly deep history. It has been documented as far back as 1500 BCE. In India, nose piercing is linked to the Hindu goddess Lakshmi. Many Hindu women wear a nose stud in the left nostril. This is often done because of associations in Ayurvedic medicine.

Nose piercing has been practiced by the Bedouin of the Middle East and the Berber peoples of Africa. Many Native American and Alaskan tribes practiced septum piercing. The Aztecs, Mayans, and Incas used gold septum rings for adornment. Some tribes in New Guinea used bones and feathers in their noses to symbolize wealth or virility. The Guna people of Panama continue these traditions today.

Lip and tongue piercings have also been used by many cultures. Lip adornments are often called labrets. These were worn by the Tlingit, the people of Papua New Guinea, and those in the Amazon basin.

Some cultures practice lip stretching. This involves inserting plates or plugs into a pierced lip to make the opening larger. In parts of Malawi, women used a lip disc called a pelele. These could reach several inches in diameter. In the Nile Valley, women of the Mursi tribe wear lip rings. Tongue piercing was used as a ritual symbol by the Aztecs, Olmec, and Mayan cultures. In Mayan rituals, nobility would pierce their tongues with thorns. They would then collect the blood to honor their gods.

Nipple and genital piercings have also been practiced by various cultures. Nipple piercing dates back at least to Ancient Rome. Genital piercing is described in Ancient India as early as 550 CE. The Kama Sutra describes using pins for sexual enhancement.

Some historical claims about these piercings have been disputed. For instance, some stories suggest Prince Albert invented certain piercings. Others claim navel piercing was common in ancient Egypt. However, many historians find no records to support those specific claims. Despite these debates, the practice remains a part of human history.

In Western culture, the popularity of piercing has changed over time. It waxed and waned for many years. It saw an increase in popularity after World War II. In the 1970s, people began seeking piercings in areas other than the ears. By the 1990s, these practices moved into the mainstream.

Today, piercing remains a subject of discussion. Some groups, like schools or employers, may restrict where piercings can be placed. Some people even pursue extreme forms of the practice. Guinness has recorded individuals with hundreds or even thousands of piercings. Whether for tradition or fashion, piercing remains a powerful way people mark their bodies.
