It involves making a small opening in the skin. People can then wear jewelry in that opening. Sometimes, people even use implants under the skin. These can be made of gold, platinum, or medical steel. People choose to pierce for many different reasons. Some do it for religious or spiritual beliefs. Others use it for self-expression or to show beauty. Some people even do it to follow or rebel against their culture.

There are many ways to perform a piercing. Modern piercers use special tools to stay safe. They use clean materials to help the body heal. Even with care, there are some risks to watch for. A person might have an allergic reaction or an infection. They might also get scars or physical injuries. Healing time depends on where the piercing is located. A genital piercing might heal in just one month. However, a navel piercing can take two full years to heal.

The oldest mummified remains found had earrings. These belonged to Ötzi the Iceman from 5,300 years ago. Earrings were also found in the Sumerian city of Ur. These date back to 2500 BCE. Nose piercings are also very old. They have been documented since 1500 BCE. Many different cultures have used piercings for thousands of years. This includes tribes in Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas.

Different groups use piercings to show who they are. Among the Tlingit people, earrings showed wealth and nobility. In ancient Egypt, gold earrings were very common. The ancient Greeks wore earrings shaped like sacred birds. In India, many Hindu women wear a nose stud. This is often done to mark a woman's age for marriage. Some people in the Nile Valley wear large lip rings. In the Amazon, people have used lip plates for a long time. These items help tell a story about a person's life.

Piercing has changed over time in many places. In Europe, earrings were popular for men in the 16th century. Sailors sometimes pierced their ears to help with long-distance vision. They also believed an earring could pay for a burial at sea. In Western culture, piercings became more popular after World War II. In the 1970s, people began piercing more than just their ears. By the 1990s, these styles became part of mainstream fashion. Today, people continue to find new ways to use jewelry to decorate themselves.
