They serve as a way for individuals to decorate their bodies and express personal style. Most people wear them through a piercing in the earlobe. However, earrings can also be attached using stickers or clip-on mechanisms.

Some people choose to pierce other external parts of the ear. These locations include the tragus, the rook, or the helix. Piercings in these upper areas are known as cartilage piercings. These are more complex to perform than lobe piercings and require more time to heal.

There are many different ways to wear earrings depending on the desired look.

A common choice is the stud earring. A stud features a gemstone or ornament mounted on a narrow post. This post passes through the piercing and is held by a removable friction back or clutch. From the front, the stud appears to be floating on the earlobe.

Another popular style is the hoop, which is a circular ring. For more dramatic looks, people wear statement earrings. These are designed to invite attention through bold colors, tassels, or sparkles.

Some specialized jewelry includes barbell earrings, which resemble a weightlifting barbell with an orb on each end. Others use claws or talons, which are tapered shapes worn in stretched earlobes.

Earring components can be made from a vast variety of materials.

Jewelers use metals, plastic, glass, and wood to create different designs. They also use more expensive materials like precious stones, beads, and bone. The physical size of an earring is limited by the earlobe. The earlobe must be able to hold the weight without tearing. If heavy earrings are worn for a long time, they can cause the piercing to stretch. This stretching can happen naturally over time, or it can be done intentionally.

Ear piercing is one of the oldest known forms of body modification.

In the Biblical record, gold earrings were often a sign of wealth. However, ear piercing was also used on slaves. For sailors, a pierced earlobe was a specific symbol. It meant the wearer had sailed around the world or crossed the equator. In the 16th century, some English observers viewed men wearing gold or pearl rings in their ears as a sign of degeneracy. In contrast, the Ainu people of Japan had a tradition of wearing earrings for both men and women. This tradition was later restricted by the Meiji government in the late 19th century.

In the modern era, the popularity of earrings has shifted many times.

In the mid-20th century, piercing was sometimes viewed as primitive or barbaric. This changed after Queen Elizabeth II had her ears pierced in 1951. By the 1960s, young people used ear piercing as a way to rebel against traditional culture. The 1970s saw the rise of multiple piercings in the punk rock community. By the 1980s, male pop stars and professional athletes helped make pierced ears a mainstream fashion trend.

This level of customization has turned ear piercing into a form of haute couture. It involves professional piercers using specialized tools like bevelled needles.
