Black bullhead

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The black bullhead is a type of catfish. It lives in the central United States. It can live in warm or muddy water. It can even live where there is very little oxygen. This helps it live where other fish cannot.

This fish has a wide head and no scales. Instead, it has 100,000 taste receptors. These are tiny spots that help it sense food. Many of these spots are on its barbels. Barbels are the black whiskers near its mouth. It also has sharp spines on its fins. It uses these to protect itself from predators.

Black bullheads eat almost anything. They eat plants, bugs, and small fish. They use small, pointed teeth to eat. Most of these fish are nocturnal. This means they like to feed at night. Young fish may feed during the day.

In the winter, the fish hides. It buries itself in the lake bottom. It may stop eating to stay safe in the cold. In the spring, they make eggs. Females dig a small hole in the lake floor. The males then help care for the eggs.
