A bird nest is a special place. Birds use it to lay eggs. They also use it to raise their young.

Nests come in many shapes. Some birds make tiny cup nests. Others build huge mounds of sticks and leaves.

Some birds make a scrape. A scrape is just a shallow dip in the dirt.

These birds might line the dip with shells or feathers. This helps keep the eggs warm or hides them from view.

Not all birds build nests. Some lay eggs on rocky ledges. Other birds, like penguins, keep eggs on their feet.

Some birds are even tricksters. They lay their eggs in the nests of other birds. These other birds then raise the eggs.

Birds use different ways to build. In some species, the female does the work. In others, the male builds the nest. Some birds even use metal spikes to stay safe. Magpies have used up to 1,500 spikes in one nest! This helps keep predators away from their chicks.
