A bird nest is a specific location where birds lay and incubate their eggs. It is also the place where they raise their young. While many people think of a nest as a structure built by the bird, that definition is actually quite narrow.

A nest can be a complex, woven object or just a simple shallow depression in the sand. Some birds use natural cavities like tree holes or rock crevices. Others create massive mounds of vegetation. Regardless of the form, the primary goal is to provide a safe environment for developing offspring. The scientific study of these structures is known as nidology or caliology.

The way a nest works depends heavily on the environment and the species. In cold climates, a nest must prevent heat loss. For example, a scrape nest—a shallow dip in the ground—can protect an egg from cold winds. If the nest is lined with natural vegetation, the egg loses heat 25% more slowly than if it were on bare ground. In very cold areas, a nest must be deep enough to block wind but shallow enough to avoid the freezing temperatures of the permafrost.

Conversely, in hot deserts, nests must allow for convective cooling. Some birds use shade or even soak their feathers in water to cool the eggs through evaporation.

Nests vary greatly in their physical architecture. Many birds build cup nests, such as the American robin or the Eurasian blackbird. Some species, like the village weaver, create elaborate hanging nests.

Other birds create enormous mound nests. The Australasian megapodes build huge piles of soil, sticks, and leaves. These mounds act like giant compost heaps. As microorganisms and thermophilic fungi respire within the rotting material, they generate heat. This internal heat incubates the eggs without the parent needing to sit on them constantly.

For some birds, like weaver birds, the nest also serves as a part of a courtship display. This means a male's ability to build a high-quality nest can help him attract a mate. In some cases, older young from previous broods may even stay to help the adults.

Not all birds use a traditional nest structure. Some species, like the common murre or razorbill, lay eggs directly on narrow, rocky ledges. To prevent the eggs from falling, these birds lay eggs that are dramatically pointed at one end. If disturbed, the eggs roll in a circle rather than falling off the cliff.

Penguins represent another extreme. King and emperor penguins do not build nests at all. Instead, they protect their eggs by tucking them between their feet and folds of skin on their bellies. This allows emperor penguins to huddle in large groups to share body heat during the Antarctic winter.

Some birds take a different approach to parenting through brood parasitism. Species such as the New World cowbird, honeyguides, and many cuckoos do not build nests for their own young. Instead, they lay their eggs in the active nests of other bird species. These "foster parents" then do the work of rearing the chicks.

Nests can also be influenced by human environments. While most birds build a new nest every year, some species refurbish old ones. Large eagles often use the same platform nests, called eyries, for many years.

In urban areas, the Eurasian coot has been observed reusing nesting sites in canals. These nests can become stratified with layers of plastic waste over decades. Because plastic does not degrade, scientists can actually date these layers using expiration dates on food packaging found inside.
