Biopsy

A biopsy is a medical test used to study health. Doctors use it to find out if a person has a disease. They do this by taking a small sample of cells or tissue from the body.

A surgeon or a specialist like a radiologist might perform the test. The main goal is to see the presence or the extent of a sickness. This helps doctors understand if a lump is benign or malignant. Benign means the cells are not cancer. Malignant means the cells are cancer.

There are different ways to take these samples. In an excisional biopsy, a doctor removes an entire lump or area. An incisional biopsy or core biopsy only takes a small part of the tissue. Sometimes, a doctor uses a needle to pull out cells. This is called a needle aspiration biopsy.

After the sample is taken, it goes through many steps. It is fixed, dehydrated, and embedded in material. Then, it is cut into thin sections and stained with colors. Finally, a pathologist looks at the sample under a microscope.

People have used biopsies for a very long time. An Arab physician named Abulcasis lived from 1013 to 1107. He was one of the earliest to use a biopsy for diagnosis. He used a needle to puncture the thyroid to study goiters. The word biopsy comes from two Greek words. These words mean "life" and "a sight." In 1879, a French doctor named Ernest Besnier introduced the word to the medical world.

Biopsies can happen in many places in the body. Doctors can take samples from the skin, the lungs, or the bone.

They can even use a tube called an endoscope to reach the stomach. Some new tests are called liquid biopsies. These are not traditional biopsies because they only use blood tests. They look for tiny bits of tumor DNA or cells in the blood. A 2014 study looked at the blood of 846 patients. It found tumor DNA in over 80 percent of people with metastatic cancers.

Liquid biopsies are very helpful for modern medicine. They allow doctors to watch how a disease changes in real time. This is easier than doing a traditional biopsy many times. Traditional biopsies can be invasive and hard to repeat.

Liquid biopsies can help plan special treatments for each person. They can also check if cancer cells remain after surgery. This helps doctors stay ahead of the disease. It is a way to use science to keep people healthy.
