Biomagnification is a way that substances build up in living things. This happens as you move up a food chain. It is also called bioamplification or biological magnification.

When a substance moves through the chain, its concentration increases. This means there is more of the substance in each living thing. It can eventually reach levels that are dangerous. This process is very important for scientists to study. It helps us understand how pollution affects the whole world.

This process works in a specific way. Many harmful substances are lipophilic. This means they dissolve in fat but not in water. They also do not leave the body easily.

First, a substance enters a food web, like an ocean. Small creatures like zooplankton absorb the substance. Then, small fish eat many of those tiny creatures. A larger fish then eats many small fish. Each step collects more of the substance from the prey. The concentration grows larger at every level.

Scientists have studied this for a long time. In the 1950s, people noticed a big problem with a pesticide called DDT. This chemical was used in agriculture. It caused the eggshells of birds to become very thin. Because of this, populations of bald eagles and peregrine falcons dropped in North America. Many parts of the world have now banned DDT. This ban helped these predatory birds recover. It shows that we can help nature by stopping biomagnification.

There are many real numbers that show this effect. For example, let's look at mercury in the ocean. Herring might only have 0.01 parts per million of mercury. However, a shark can have more than 1 part per million.

This is a huge difference. Other substances like PCBs and toxaphene also biomagnify. Some metals like lead, cadmium, and arsenic are also part of this. These metals are chemical elements, so they do not break down. They stay in the environment for a long time.

To measure this, scientists use special math. They use something called a Biomagnification Factor, or BMF. This compares the amount in a predator to the amount in its prey. If the BMF is greater than 1, the substance is building up. They also use a Trophic Magnification Factor, or TMF. This looks at the whole food web at once. A TMF greater than 1 means biomagnification is happening. These tools help us see how chemicals move through nature.
