Harmful things can move through a food chain. This is called biomagnification. It is a way that a substance builds up in living things.

This happens when a substance stays in an animal's body. Many of these things like to stay in fat. They do not leave the body easily.

Imagine a pond with a tiny bit of poison. Small bugs eat the poison. Then, small fish eat many bugs. Each fish takes in all the poison from those bugs. Next, a big fish eats many small fish. The big fish now has a much higher amount of poison.

This process makes the poison stronger as it moves up. For example, herring has a tiny bit of mercury. But a shark has much more. This can be very bad for top predators. In the 1950s, a chemical called DDT hurt many birds. It made their eggshells too thin. This caused their numbers to drop. Many places have now banned DDT to help birds like bald eagles stay safe.
