A bioindicator is a living thing that shows how healthy nature is. These organisms or groups of species reveal the status of their environment. They can show if there is pollution in the air, water, or soil. Scientists use them to find problems that machines might miss. Bioindicators can show the total effects of many different pollutants. They can even show how long a problem has been present.

There are many ways these living things respond to changes. They might change how they act or how they grow. Their bodies might change their shape or their internal chemistry. Scientists can study their population size to see if they are thriving. They can also look at the amount of certain elements inside them. For example, some plants soak up pollutants into their leaves or bark. This makes it easy for researchers to measure how much pollution is around.

Researchers use a special way to check if a place is healthy. They first find a reference site with very little human disturbance. This site is a place where nature is mostly left alone. Then, they look at the indicator species in the study area. They compare the two places to see what is different. This helps them understand the health of the study region. It is important to use the right species for the right place.

Many different types of life work as indicators. Lichens are tiny growths made of fungi and algae. Some species, like Xanthoria parietina, soak up heavy metals from the air. Other lichens, like Lobaria pulmonaria, show the age of a forest. In the water, tiny crustaceans called copepods can show changes in an ecosystem. In the air, certain vascular plants can show damage from ozone. These plants are found in many places like Japan and Ethiopia.

Animals also provide very important signals to scientists. American crows can show if the West Nile Virus is in an area. Frogs and toads are excellent models for studying pollution. This is because they have thin, permeable skin. They absorb chemicals through their skin and their gill membranes. This makes them very sensitive to things like agricultural pesticides. Scientists watch for changes in how frogs move or grow. These changes act as early warning signals for the whole environment.
